CANNES — Studiocanal, Europe’s biggest TV-film production-distribution-sales company, owned by Vivendi’s Canal Plus Group, has closed international sales on Danish family relationship drama “Ride Upon the Storm,” a flagship title in Studiocanal’s drive into high-end European drama series.
Adam Price’s follow-up to “Borgen,” “Ride Upon the Storm,” starring Lars Mikkelsen (“House of Cards”), has been acquired by a broad gamut of TV operators from South African pay TV network M-Net Africa, to public broadcasters such as TVNZ for New Zealand and RTE Eire, as well as SBS Australia, which has a strong line in foreign-language series.
Further buyers include Lumière Benelux, RTVS Slovakia, NC+ in Poland; and LRT Lithuania. Studiocanal sold the drama to Telefonica’s Movistar + in Spain; upscale European broadcaster Arte has rights to French and German-speaking Europe. Danish pubcaster DR, which lead-produced the drama with Arte France and SAM le Français, aired “Ride Upon the Storm” from September.
A number of important territories are now under discussion especially now that digital rights have been fully cleared, said Beatriz Campos, Studiocanal head of international sales for TV series.

The score for ‘Ride Upon The Storm’ (‘Herrens veje’) has been nominated for the prestigeous Carlprisen, an award given every year by the Danish Music Publishers’ Association. Together with his partner Fridolin Nordsø, Kristian Leth is up for the award which will be given out April 24th at a grand ceremony in Copenhagen.
Kristian Leth and Fridolin Nordsø already have one Carlprisen for biggest radio airplay for a single track in 2011 – for the track ‘Speak Out Now’ which they wrote and produced for the singer Oh Land.
The documentary ‘Originals’ (‘De originale’) was shown during the Danish documentary festival CPH:DOX featuring a score by Kristian Leth. The movie was directed by Stig Guldberg and produced by Klassefilm.
Here’s what the festival wrote:
Bittersweet and life-affirming film about the friendship between four proud, adult outcasts.
The author Lars Morell and his three friends Boje, Anders and Veigaard share in common that they are out of synch with their times and surrounding society – and now and again also with themselves and each other. They don’t give a hoot about today’s prevailing norms and what others might think of them. And they are also attracted by all things weird, chaotic and cheerfully mad about each other. ‘The Originals’ took over seven years to make, and follows the friends through ups and downs with difficult emotions. It is a life on the edge, between light and dark, the cheerful and the horrible, between order and chaos. What from the outside might look like ‘losers’ turn out, upon closer inspection, to be loveable originals, who represent other values than the norm. Why should the majority decide what is normal? Stig Guldberg’s film pays tribute to friendship, in good times and bad, and through its unusual antiheroes it asks: what can we learn from originals and what would we do without friendship?
After the critically acclaimed season 1 of the series by BAFTA-winning creator Adam Price – starring Lars Mikkelsen (Sherlock, House of Cards) – work has begun on season 2. Together with long time partner Fridolin Nordsø, Kristian Leth is composing and writing all the music for the award-winning series.

The radio/podcast series ‘Kristian Leth and The Outsider’ (‘Kristian Leth og Outsideren’) made for DR P2 by Leth, focusing on pianist Glenn Gould won the Prix Italia for best Music Documentary in 2017.
The series is a sweeping and adventurous exploration of the genius of Gould and his work on Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The jury called the program “a luxury product – a radiophonic pearl. It is ambitious, well researched and captivating. It sounds difficult, but that’s Leth.”
Denmark’s two biggest National TV networks – DR1 and TV2 – aired two big TV series during the fall of 2017. ”Ride Upon The Storm’ (‘Herrens veje’) and ‘Rita’ (a Netflix Co-production). Kristian Leth and long-time partner Fridolin Nordsø wrote and produced all music and scored both.
‘Ride Upon The Storm’ was written and produced by BAFTA-winning Adam Price (‘Borgen’) and received great reviews. The music was hailed in Danish press. It will be released in the rest of the world in 2018. Meanwhile, the original songs written for ‘Rita’ were released on an EP due to popular demand.
In an article on the original songs written for both series you can hear the title songs as well as many of the different pieces. The title song for ‘Ride Upon The Storm’ is sung by Claus Hempler. Other songs feature artists like Indians and SaveUs.
Kristian Leth’s debut novel Mithos will be out in Danish on Lindhardt & Ringhof in May 2017. It is available for pre-order now.
